Why is LiFePO₄ Safer Than Other Lithium-Ion Batteries?
Structural and thermal reasons LiFePO₄ is widely regarded as the safest lithium-ion chemistry.
LiFePO₄ batteries are widely regarded as the safest type of lithium-ion battery due to their inherent chemical and structural stability.
1. Stronger Olivine Crystal Structure
Unlike layered oxide structures used in other lithium-ion batteries, LiFePO₄ has a stable olivine crystal structure that is more resistant to thermal runaway.
2. Higher Thermal Stability
LiFePO₄ has a much higher thermal runaway temperature (around 270°C / 518°F) compared to chemistries such as LCO.
3. No Easy Oxygen Release
Strong covalent bonds in the olivine structure reduce oxygen release under abuse conditions, lowering fire propagation risk.
4. Better Abuse Tolerance
LiFePO₄ is more tolerant to overcharge and overdischarge conditions when paired with a proper BMS.
